It’s February! The month of love – for oral health. We’re well into National Children’s Dental Health Month, sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA). This year’s theme is “Rock Your Smile,” connecting with the inner rock star in kids of every age group.
Dental Health Month is a big one for raising awareness about oral health. Alameda and Pleasanton Pediatric Dentistry are active participants in the cause. Our educational outreach program, Tooth Fairy Island, sends dedicated staff members from the dental office to the classroom, where they share secrets for getting preschoolers to pre-teens excited about brushing, flossing, and getting their pearly whites checked twice a year.
Tooth Fairy Island presentations are just one way we help kids learn how to take good care of their teeth and gums. In fact, our goal is to keep Tooth Fairy Island presentations going all year long. So far, 10 schools in Pleasanton and Alameda have already benefited from our volunteer efforts.
Parents looking for new ways to teach young children about oral health at home have a range of interactive materials available for free on the web. Here are some ideas:
Get to know Flossy and Buck McGrinn and Den and Gen Smiley, the best friends and band members behind the “Rock Your Smile” story. Remind your kids that mouthguards and x-rays can be fun, especially when they’re part of a Rock Your Smile Word Search. Uncover a secret code to learn the lyrics of Den Smiley’s new song. Use the free Dental Health Month calendar to create a reward chart. Write your daily brushing and flossing goals on the reward chart. When the reward chart is completed, present your child with a Healthy Smile Certificate.
