Ask the Dentist, My Child Has Three Loose Teeth. Is This Normal?
Posted on 11/6/2017 by Jessica Edgerton
Right around the time your child enters kindergarten or the first grade, she will get her first loose tooth. From there, it may seem like one loose tooth after another. Sometimes, a child will have more than one loose tooth at the same time. Is this normal? You’ve come to the right place to find out. Here’s what Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s Dr. Ngo has to say about multiple loose teeth:

Is it normal for one or more baby tooth to be loose at the same time?

Yes! It is completely normal to have anywhere from one, even up to six baby teeth loose all at once. This happens especially with the canines and molars. The front teeth usually fall out in the order that they grew in when the child was a baby, and the back teeth fall out around the ages of 10 to 12.

When is it not normal?

There are some instances where two neighboring teeth fall out at the same time because the adult tooth is a lot wider than the baby tooth and it ends up loosening two baby teeth rather than one. Sometimes teeth that have been injured or have an infection may also get loose earlier than they should. Early loss of a tooth can lead to crooked and impacted adult teeth.

What should parents do when this happens?

Parents should take their child to the office to get it checked out so that we can determine if they are losing teeth in a healthy way.

Thanks, Dr. Ngo! The Tooth Fairy will be busy at your house throughout your child’s elementary school years. All 28 permanent adult teeth will set in by the time she is about 13 years old.
