On Saturday, March 23, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s doctors and staff were hard at work to Give Kids a Smile. While most dental offices were closed for the weekend, Drs. Ngo, Katheria, and Shaffer and 11 Alameda and Pleasanton Pediatric Dentistry staff members volunteered their time to provide much-needed dental care to underserved kids.
“We could not help these families without our wonderful team, whose energy and enthusiasm at 7:30 in the morning was invigorating,” Dr. Ngo says.
Give Kids a Smile is an American Dental Association (ADA)-sponsored program that galvanizes dental societies, schools, and health centers across the country to provide oral health care services to children who come from low-income backgrounds.
At Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s South Shore office, several children received fillings, crowns, or sealants, and those waiting for dental work learned about brushing and flossing through a fun-filled Tooth Fairy Island presentation, complete with games, arts and crafts, and hands-on activities.
“Through one day’s volunteer efforts, the children we served will reap the benefits for years to come,” Dr. Katheria says.
As of Wednesday, March 27, the American Dental Society reports that over 1,782 Give Kids a Smile events have taken place this year, resulting in over 403,090 children served by over 10,000 dentists and almost 32,000 other volunteers.
