Steps to Take When Children Lose Adult Teeth

Posted on 4/25/2019 by Front Office Alameda
Steps to Take When Children Lose Adult TeethIt can be frightening to children and parents alike if your child is in a situation that they have lost a permanent tooth, but these things do happen from time to time.

Knowing what to do before you find yourself in an emergency situation can be the difference between saving the permanent tooth, or losing it for good.

What To Do?
If your child has a tooth that has been knocked out completely, it is important that the tooth is re-inserted into the socket as soon as possible. Whether a parent, coach, teacher or your child handles it, the tooth should be gently and quickly cleaned off and inserted back into the empty socket.

If a tooth cannot be immediately re-inserted into the socket, it should be stored properly until you can get to our office. A cold glass of milk is your best option, simply place the tooth in the milk and bring it to us as soon as possible. Saliva is another viable option if you do not have milk available.

Either holding the tooth in the mouth or spitting into a cup and storing the cup in the saliva on the way to our office. Do not store the tooth in plain water, saline solution or yogurt. While these may sound like good options in a pinch, they are not and they will damage the tooth.

Call our office immediately if your child loses a permanent tooth. We will get you in to see one of our dentists quickly in the event of an emergency. The quicker we can get the tooth re-implanted into the empty socket, the more likely the tooth can be saved.

Talk with your child about what to do if they lose a permanent tooth. Knowing about the possibilities and how to handle the emergency can help your child remain calm and know what steps to take.
